Exotic triggering patterns

At some point, my brain started to understand the potential we have with this type of technology. What about triggering two cameras facing each other at the same time, or skipping half of the cameras on the first iteration in order to fire two spins with different timing? There are so many different ways of thinking of this, but how could we make this available in a simple user interface? I thought that the most flexible way would be to simply let you copy-paste timing from an excel sheet. This way, you’ll be able to bring to life your own ideas.

From Xangle Camera Server, you can create exotic triggering patterns by changing the trigger mode to “custom trigger sequence” (direct link: http://localhost:8091/custom-trigger-sequences). In some cases, you’ll also need to create a custom-playback-sequence (Dashboard / playback)

Samples

  1. Jump-and-Freeze 720°
    1. We start by triggering all ODD cameras (1, 3, 5...) with a delay, and then the EVEN (2, 4, 6...) at the very same time, hence the "jump and freeze" and the 720 degrees (2x 360° on the playback). Here’s a real life demo from our studio (using 176 cameras):
Now to simply things, let’s work with 12 cameras instead. In the screenshot below, we’re triggering odd numbered cameras at a 10ms interval which brings us to 70ms for the frozen part (even numbered cameras)

Now, on the default playback, you’ll get very weird results as both iterations are going to be mixed. The workaround is to create a “custom playback sequence” (dashboard / playback) with the images showing in that order: 1,3,5,7,9,11,2,4,6,8,10,12. You can then automatically use this playback-sequence when selecting this custom-trigger-sequence.

In the example above, there’s no need to enter the values manually. To ease the editing of the values, open an Excel sheet (this also works in Google Spreadsheets), and copy/paste the values directly in Xangle. Knowing how to create formulas in Excel is going to dramatically help you creating these sequences in minutes.
